Deploy, Manage, and Build
Applications on BackOffice Server 2000
| Integrated
Setup |
Updated
BackOffice Server 2000 installs and configures all application
components and service packs through a single integrated setup
utility that includes disk space, system compatibility, and
dependency checking. BackOffice Server Setup detects current
version levels and recommends appropriate component or service
pack upgrades, significantly reducing the complexity of server
setup by consolidating the number of setup screens. A
maintenance mode lets administrators add or remove both
value-added features and server product components. Setup also
automatically upgrades Microsoft Small Business Server for
growing organizations that need more capacity. |
| MultiServer
Deployment |
New
BackOffice Server 2000 provides flexible deployment by allowing
administrators to install single instances of the server product
components they want to use on any of up to three physical
server machines. The MultiServer Planning Wizard helps
administrators plan the installation and guides them through
deploying the servers. In addition, other BackOffice
Server-specific features, such as the BackOffice Server
Management Consoles and server health monitoring automatically
detect and allow for server products that are installed on
different systems. |
| MultiServer
Planning Wizard |
New
Before users deploy BackOffice Server 2000, they can optimize
the environment by using the MultiServer Planning Wizard and
online guide to determine hardware requirements and plan which
components will be necessary to deploy on which systems in their
MultiServer configuration. BackOffice Server Setup then
automatically detects the selected server application and guides
the user through the setup of the remaining components and
servers. |
| Internet
Connection Wizard |
New
The Internet Connection Wizard guides users through configuring
BackOffice Server as the gateway server connecting the IT
network to the Internet. The wizard helps with configuration of
Windows 2000, TCP/IP, e-mail, and firewalls. |
| To-Do
Lists and Home Snap-In |
Updated
Post-setup configuration task lists and a BackOffice Home Page
help IT personnel get up and running even faster, providing
access to tools, documentation, and external knowledge on
configuring and using BackOffice Server 2000. |
| Latest
Service Packs for Legacy Components |
Updated
For environments in which a phased-upgrade approach is used to
migrate to Windows 2000 Server, the latest service packs for
legacy BackOffice Server components are integrated into
BackOffice Server 2000 Setup, including Exchange Server 5.5
Service Pack 3, SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 5a, Site Server 3.0
Service Pack 4, and SNA Server 4.0 Service Pack 3. |
| Custom
Administrator Consoles with Management Wizards |
Updated
The BackOffice Management Console provides a single, simple user
interface for managing tasks across multiple BackOffice Server
components, which can be customized and delivered to
administrators or n-tier help desk specialists around the
organization—and even installed on client workstations. New
unique server wizards help with administration tasks such as
managing user accounts and mailboxes, e-mail distribution lists,
and Active Directory queries. New saved consoles can be created
from the basic building blocks of management wizards and
snap-ins and can be locked down to expose only those functions
that are necessary for specific administrative roles. |
| Windows
Terminal Services–Based Administration |
New
Administrators can use either an Internet connection through a
Web client such as Microsoft Internet Explorer browser software
version 5 or a direct-dial RAS connection to manage remote sites
with the BackOffice Server management console, exposing the same
management software functionality as if the user were on the LAN
or sitting in front of the server machine. |
| Health
Monitor 2.1 |
New
BackOffice Server 2000 includes Health Monitor 2.1 as a powerful
real-time monitoring tool for administrators. Health Monitor
centrally collects system data such as performance counters and
service status, enabling detailed status summary views of each
server in the organization. In response to a problem, Health
Monitor provides customizable notification actions, based on
three types of alerts: informational, warning, and critical.
Possible alert actions include e-mail alert, write problem to
.log file, running a script, and executing command-line action.
BackOffice Server extends Health Monitor with troubleshooting
articles linked directly from the alert text. |
| Server
Status Reports and Server Status View |
New
Now users can automatically view regular snapshots of the
server's status, including hardware condition, application
health, and system performance. These reports can be customized
to include log file attachments, and the data is also available
in XML format. The reports can be sent to administrators through
e-mail or fax and kept on file for historical views of server
usage, which can be used to plan future upgrades or required
maintenance. |
| Online
Tours and Help With Bayesian Troubleshooters |
New
Keeping systems up and running all the time is now even easier
with comprehensive HTML online help for all application and
components, including seven guided tours on deploying, managing,
and using various application and services. New Bayesian
Troubleshooters for BackOffice Server 2000 guide users through
administration rough spots by asking questions that analyze the
system's condition and then providing possible steps to remedy
the situation. |
