Anytime, Anywhere Communication
In the age of ubiquitous information, it is no longer enough to simply deliver e-mail and the Internet to the desktop. If your company is going to react with speed and intelligence to changing demands of the marketplace, you must bridge barriers of time, distance, and technology to provide every knowledge worker in your organization with real-time access to the information they need, no matter where they are.

Incorporating a wide range of emerging digital technologies such as instant messaging and real-time conferencing, Exchange 2000 provides a comprehensive communication platform that will enable everyone in your organization to stay in touch using the broadest array of devices.

Value-Added Collaborative Solutions
Messaging used to be just another way to communicate, on par with the telephone, faxes, forms, and written documents as vehicles for sharing information. Back then, messaging simply meant e-mail. Today, with Exchange 2000, you can take advantage of your messaging infrastructure to further increase knowledge worker productivity with value-added collaborative solutions.

For rapid application development, Exchange 2000 delivers built-in services such as calendaring, contact and task management, discussion groups, and document-centric workflow as well as support for Web-standard protocols, including Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).

Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Datasheet

A messaging and collaboration system is a core part of infrastructure and a central link to the Internet. Companies need messaging-based applications, such as workflow and information tracking, to find new opportunities for growth, while streamlining core operations.

Collaboration is the foundation of knowledge management, and plays an increasingly important role in e-commerce because it connects businesses with their customers and other businesses. In addition, real-time collaboration is rapidly becoming a critical business tool, allowing virtual teams to meet and work together across geographic and organizational boundaries.

Below you will find an overview of the entire downloadable datasheet with which you can explore the messaging and collaboration platform that offers anytime, anywhere communication.

Low Cost-of-Ownership Messaging and Collaboration

Exchange 2000 Server is an application designed specifically for Microsoft Windows® 2000 Server. Exchange 2000 Server delivers a reliable, scalable, and manageable infrastructure with 24x7 messaging and collaboration and low cost of ownership.

  • Reliable, scalable platform with low cost of ownership. Exchange 2000 is fully integrated with Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory™ service, allowing system administrators to create a single enterprise directory for managing both messaging and network resources. Exchange 2000 enables you to consolidate servers while increasing system availability. Exchange 2000 can be clustered to support the highest levels of reliability.
  • Secure infrastructure that is easy to manage. Administration of Exchange is integrated with the familiar, single-seat management interface provided by the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) in Windows 2000. Exchange 2000 also uses the full power of Windows 2000 to ensure messaging and collaboration security. Administrative policies can be used to simplify large-scale changes to the messaging objects in the Active Directory.
  • High performance Internet messaging. The Exchange 2000 database is optimized for high-performance Internet messaging using SMTP routing and native support for MIME data types without data conversion.

Anytime, Anywhere Communication

Access to information across geographic, organizational, and technology barriers is critical to the success of the knowledge worker. With features such as Instant Messaging and real-time data and video conferencing, Exchange 2000 provides access to the people and information you want.

  • Access information from anywhere. Information in Exchange 2000 can be accessed using Office 2000, Web browsers, Microsoft Windows Explorer, cellular phones, and handheld computers. The Outlook Web Access client has been improved and provides a robust client for remote users, home users, and users of non-Windows and non-Macintosh computers.
  • Communicate instantly. With Instant Messaging, users of Exchange 2000 can send spontaneous, urgent communications that appear on another user's screen, opening up new avenues for team collaboration and business responsiveness.
  • Work together using data and video conferencing (requires Microsoft Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server). Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server provides an enterprise-ready client/server solution for real-time conferencing, document authoring, white boarding, text discussion, and file transfer.
  • Easily manage your conferencing infrastructure (requires Microsoft Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server). Exchange 2000 Conferencing Server coordinates a variety of different conferencing technologies, as well as the administration of limited corporate conferencing resources. Conference Management Service keeps track of scheduled conferences and provides administrators with control of attendee access to conferences.

Value-Added Collaborative Solutions

Exchange 2000 supports a wide range of collaborative activities, including group scheduling capabilities, discussion groups, and team folders. With built-in content indexing and search, users can find and share information quickly. Exchange 2000 combines powerful workflow tools with Web standards like Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).

  • Collaborative services. You can take advantage of built-in services for messaging, calendaring, contact and task management, discussion groups, and document-centric workflow. Build a complete solution or simply drop in one of these services to an existing Web solution.
  • Building blocks. Exchange 2000 forms and re-usable Outlook Web Access features let you quickly and easily add Exchange collaborative services to your Web solutions.
  • Build Web applications with existing tools and skills. Exchange 2000includes native support for XML, Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV) and Active Server Pages (ASP), and more. Data access technologies, such as OLE DB and Microsoft ActiveX® Data Objects (ADO), allow developers to use their existing skills and applications. Applications can be built with development tools such as Microsoft Visual Studio®, Microsoft FrontPage® 2000, and Microsoft Office Developer Edition.
  • Collaboration Data Objects. Significant enhancements to the Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) model make it much easier to incorporate the powerful features of Exchange 2000—messaging, calendaring, contact management, and system management—directly into workflow applications. With this new version of CDO, you can add custom functionality that streamlines business processes.
  • Automate business processes. A built-in workflow engine provides a high-performance, reliable, and secure platform for departmental and enterprise workflow and tracking applications.
Active Directory Integration

Exchange 2000 takes full advantage of the power of Microsoft Windows® 2000 Active Directory®, enabling system administrators to create an enterprise directory, a single point of management for all users, groups, permissions, configuration data, network login, file, and Web shares. Active Directory is an enterprise-class, directory service that is highly scalable, built using Internet-standard technologies, and fully integrated with Exchange at the operating system level. Active Directory allows a single point of administration for all users, messaging and network resources, including e-mail and mailbox information, configuration information, files, peripheral devices, host connections, databases, Web access, users, other arbitrary objects, services, and more. All Exchange 2000 directory information, including information about users, mailboxes, servers, sites, and custom recipients, is stored in Active Directory. While administrators reap the benefits of unified administration, knowledge workers accustomed to accessing the Exchange Server directory, called the Global Address List, will experience no user interface changes and require no retraining when switching to Active Directory. Features of the integration of Exchange Server and Active Directory include the following:

  • Unified administration of Exchange Server and Windows 2000 objects allows an administrator to manage all user data in one place, with one set of tools. Administrators can perform common tasks easily with the aid of Delegation Wizards.
  • Security groups in Windows 2000 can be automatically used as Exchange 2000 distribution lists, removing the need to create a parallel set of distribution lists for each department or group.
  • Active Directory schema extensibility allows flexible management of distributed information, including easy configuration of Exchange user and server information.
  • Use of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) as a native access protocol for directory information gives e-mail directory access to a wide range of client software.
